On This Day In TCXPI History

January 20, 1986 the First Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was observed as a National Holiday.

It took 15 years to create the federal Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Congressman John Conyers, Democrat from Michigan, first introduced legislation for a commemorative holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968.

After the bill became stalled, petitions endorsing the holiday containing six million names were submitted to Congress.
Conyers and Rep. Shirley Chisholm, Democrat of New York, resubmitted King holiday legislation each subsequent legislative session. Public pressure for the holiday mounted during the 1982 and 1983 civil rights marches in Washington.

Congress passed the holiday legislation in 1983, which was then signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

A compromise moving the holiday from Jan. 15, King's birthday, which was considered too close to Christmas and New Year's, to the third Monday in January helped overcome opposition to the law.
January 20, 1986 marked the first observance of the Federal legal holiday, established by Public Law 98-144, honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

A number of states resisted celebrating the holiday. Some opponents said Dr. King did not deserve his own holiday, contending that the entire civil rights movement rather than one individual, however instrumental, should be honored.

Several southern states include celebrations for various Confederate generals on that day, while Utah calls it Human Rights Day. Legislation is now pending to change the name to Martin Luther King Day. Arizona voters approved the holiday in 1992 after a threatened tourist boycott. In 1999, New Hampshire changed the name of Civil Rights Day to Martin Luther King, Jr., Day.

This holiday, which occurs on the third Monday in January each year, was established to serve as a time for Americans to reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The day was not officially observed in all 50 states until 2000.

The Year Of RAturn 2019 - TCXPI's Trips To The Motherland - Ghana - Day #2

On my first morning in Ghana, I take a walk through the community. The very first thing I do is go the the local pharmacy to purchase the pills for prevention of malaria. There are two pills that you take weekly to prevent contracting malaria.

The Pharmacy Clerks were very helpful and resourceful. I asked them where
I should have lunch and they told me Perfect Touch, so I went.

A gown shop in North Dzorwulu

My Taxi Driver. He waited while I ordered my food.

Perfect Touch Restaurant
It's best to call in if you're going to Perfect Touch for take-out.

The wait was long. Call in orders is prefered.

My Order.

Banku and Chicken, Plantain, Red Red (black eyed peas in red sauce) and Fish. Seasoned just right. I absolutely love Ghanaian food. It reminds me of my childhood.

The Year Of RAturn 2019 - TCXPI's Trips To The Motherland - Ghana - Day #1

I left San Francisco, CA on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 7:25am.
I arrived in Accra, Ghana on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 3:30pm.

I had two layovers - one in Trenton, NJ, the other in Toronto, Canada.
Overall the travel to Ghana was uneventful.

I hired a driver, Mohammed, who was very patient with me and assisted me in re-activating my Ghanaian phone, and converting my currency to Cedis while at the airport. He gave me his card in case I needed his services.

It felt good to be back on the Soil of the Motherland.

I AM HOME!
Kotoko International Airport

I arrived at my housing accomodations in North Dzorwulu, which also serves as an AirBnb - Vivian AirBnB. I stayed here also during my first visit in the Spring of 2018 and Dr. V and I have formed a bond. I was welcomed by the family. I went up and began settling in and unpacking. I was welcomed with a homecooked dinner. Such a wonderful surprise.

TCXPI Presents Dr. and Mrs. Martin L. King, Jr. A Story Of Love, Dedication, and Commitment

TCXPI Presents Dr. and Mrs. Martin L. King, Jr.
A Story Of Love, Dedication, and Commitment

Born and raised in Marion, Alabama, Coretta Scott graduated valedictorian from Lincoln High School. She received a B.A. in music and education from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and then went on to study concert singing at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music, where she earned a degree in voice and violin.

Coretta Scott, met Martin Luther King, Jr. who was then studying for his doctorate in systematic theology at Boston University. They were married on June 18, 1953, and in September 1954 took up residence in Montgomery, Alabama, with Coretta Scott King assuming the many responsibilities of pastor’s wife at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.

During Dr. King’s career, Mrs. King devoted most of her time to raising their four children: Yolanda Denise (1955), Martin Luther, III (1957), Dexter Scott (1961), and Bernice Albertine (1963). From the earliest days, however, she balanced mothering and Movement work, speaking before church, civic, college, fraternal and peace groups. She conceived and performed a series of favorably-reviewed Freedom Concerts which combined prose and poetry narration with musical selections and functioned as significant fundraisers for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the direct action organization of which Dr. King served as first president. In 1957, she and Dr. King journeyed to Ghana to mark that country’s independence. In 1958, they spent a belated honeymoon in Mexico, where they observed first-hand the immense gulf between extreme wealth and extreme poverty. In 1959, Dr. and Mrs. King spent nearly a month in India on a pilgrimage to disciples and sites associated with Mahatma Gandhi. In 1964, she accompanied him to Oslo, Norway, where he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Even prior to her husband’s public stand against the Vietnam War in 1967, Mrs. King functioned as liaison to peace and justice organizations, and as mediator to public officials on behalf of the unheard.

After her husband’s assassination in 1968, Mrs. King founded and devoted great energy and commitment to building and developing programs for the Atlanta-based Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change as a living memorial to her husband’s life and dream. Situated in the Freedom Hall complex encircling Dr. King’s tomb, The King Center is today located inside of a 23-acre national historic park which includes his birth home, and which hosts over one million visitors a year.

As founding President, Chair, and Chief Executive Officer, she dedicated herself to providing local, national and international programs that have trained tens of thousands of people in Dr. King’s philosophy and methods; she guided the creation and housing of the largest archives of documents from the Civil Rights Movement; and, perhaps her greatest legacy after establishing The King Center itself, Mrs. King spearheaded the massive educational and lobbying campaign to establish Dr. King’s birthday as a national holiday. In 1983, an act of Congress instituted the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission, which she chaired for its duration. And in January 1986, Mrs. King oversaw the first legal holiday in honor of her husband–a holiday which has come to be celebrated by millions of people world-wide and, in some form, in over 100 countries.
